Improving care for war veterans

In the run up to Armed Forces Day Mark had the opportunity to meet up with many war veterans who shared with him their experiences of the care provided by the NHS.

There were some amazing stories of superb physical care. In particular, one ex veteran had some shrapnel from an injury sustained in the Falklands War resurface and nearly kill him. His life was only saved by some superb medical treatment from St George’s Hospital.

However, many veterans reported difficulties with mental health provision. This is an area in which our country can and must do better for everyone. But it is particularly important that veterans get the help that they need. Mark wrote to NHS Wandsworth making a number of suggestions about how health provision for local veterans could be improved.

There is a wonderful charity called Combat Stress which helps support soldiers who have suffered emotional trauma through their war service. Mark was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with local residents to organise something practical on Armed Forces Day by arranging a fundraiser for Combat Stress. We raised around £750. A special thank you should go to the Captain of HMS Ark Royal who kindly donated the Battle Jack flag of his ship for us to auction to help raise money. It was particularly good to see so many people of all ages support the event from WWII veterans to young cadets.
