Mark attended the opening of the new Friends of St George’s shop last week.
Some readers may recall that the shop was scheduled for closure by the management of St George’s. The Government had a new scheme which required the space currently occupied by the Friends.
Given that the Friends support the hospital for nothing and raised last year over £70,000 for vital equipment like A&E ECG machines, this seemed a bizarre decision. Mark challenged the Trust management about this in an open meeting – they were somewhat surprised that someone was questioning them in public!
After meeting the Friends, Mark went with the Friends to meet with the Trust management. At this meeting, under severe pressure from local people and especially the Council, the Trust backed down and agreed to give the Friends a new shop.
