Tubelines who run the Northern Line have outlined plans to close the Northern Line for an upgrade. The closures would see the Northern Line shut for dozens of weekends until 2010.

From the summer it would also be shut from 10pm with the service winding down from 8.30 onwards. In March and April the weekend closures would be Morden to Tooting Broadway on March 27/28 and April 10/11 and Morden to Kennington on April 24/25.

Boris is completely opposed to this ludicrous closure plan but the Public Private Partnership which Gordon Brown forced on London, against even Ken Livingstone’s wishes, gives the Mayor no real say in the matter.

This is yet another example of the democratic deficit at the heart of the way we are governed. An unelected company can shut down a public service as it likes and there is nothing any elected politician or the travelling public can do about it.
